Multiculturalism Q&A Panel

Multiculturalism as it is seen by Canberra’s politicians, researchers and community leaders will be put under the microscope at a Question and Answer Panel organised by the Canberra Multicultural Community Forum on Tuesday, October 7.

The assumption has always been that multiculturalism is a bipartisan issue in the ACT, but that doesn’t mean the parties don’t have different perceptions of what it means. We are trying to recreate the atmosphere of an old fashioned town hall meeting with questions being asked from the floor and answered and debated by the panel members. It will be grass roots politics at its most effective.

Panel participants will be the Minister for Multicultural Affairs, John Hargreaves; the Leader of the Opposition, Zed Seselja; Labor candidate for Ginninderra and President of the Indigenous Dentists Association of Australia, Dr Chris Bourke; Associate Professor in Public Policy, School of Management and Policy, University of Canberra, Dr Jenny Stewart; the Chief Executive of the ACT and Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Chris Peters and a member of the ACT Muslim Advisory Council, Sally Kalek.

The panel represented a good cross section of the Canberra community including politics, the professions, business and the multicultural community.

Ross Solly, from ABC Radio, has agreed to be the host

Admission is free.

The CMCF Question and Answer session will be held in the Olympus Room of the Hellenic Club on Tuesday, October 7 at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Those planning to attend can register by emailing secretary@cmcf.org.au by October 3.

LIVING IN HARMONY PROJECT: ‘PAINT CANBERRA ORANGE’

ON A MULTICULTURAL JOURNEY

The Canberra Multicultural Community Forum (CMCF) was incorporated on Harmony Day in March 2006.

Given this auspicious beginning, it is fitting that CMCF will be the host of Canberra’s major Harmony Day events

in 2008. Thanks to funding from the Australian Government’s Living in Harmony program, CMCF will host events

in March and May this year, highlighting the importance of cultural respect and understanding and showcasing

Australia’s success in integrating migrants into our community.

On 29 March, CMCF will ask Canberrans to help it ‘paint Canberra orange’ – orange being the colour chosen to

signify the promotion of harmony. During the day selected buses will tour key cultural and religious venues around

the ACT and the region, celebrating both the diversity and the harmony of our local community. This multicultural

journey will bring together members of different cultural groups and the broader ACT community. It will be a great

opportunity for them to learn about the culture of others, while sharing details of their own journey.

Chief Minister Present Radio Awards

On 19 July 2007, the Chief Minister, Mr Jon Stanhope presented workplace training Certificates to graduates from local Community broadcaster 2XXfm.  Mr Stanhope said, ''the work of Multicultural Community Radio is very important to the ACT in providing news, information and cultural expression in a range of languages to the ACT's many ethnic communities.  More than this though community broadcasting adds important social capital to the ACT in employment and language skills, social and community development".

The current trainees will bring the number of local ethnic broadcaster who have received accredited radio training to 232 .  These trainees speak 38 languages.  This training employs local trainers and provides trainees with the technical, research and presentation skills needed to be successful broadcasters.  '' Many of the skills learnt in the training are used in other occupations requiring skills such as research, presentation and public speaking, media knowledge, technical, internet and written skills," said Mr Stanhope.

The ACT trainees are part of a national training project managed by the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters Council (NEMBC), but the training is delivered locally.  Across Australia the project in seven years trained 2700 broadcasters in 21000
modules of accredited training. These broadcasters present programmes in 92 languages.
Mr Stanhope said "the Government is very pleased to support the work being undertaken for the community by volunteer multicultural broadcasters at local Community stations.

''The value of multiculturalism to the ACT cannot be underestimated'' said Mr Stanhope.  ''Multiculturalism has enriched the social, cultural and work life of the ACT, The work of multicultural community broadcasters continues to be an important part of the life of the ACT.

As a measure of its support, the ACT Government provides substantial financial assistance for multicultural broadcasters to enable them to continue the vital work of broadcasting concerns, issues and information to listeners in their own languages.

Support for multicultural broadcasting is part of the Government's strong emphasis on promoting multiculturalism in the Australian Capital Territory.

Congratulations to the trainees and we wish them all the best for a bright and successful broadcasting career.

Lebanese Red Cross

We are proud to announce that a cheque to the value of $10,164 was delivered to the Lebanese Red Cross on 17 April 2007.  The following is background to a fundraising event that raised this money.

A fundraising dinner was organised in Australia's capital city, Canberra on Friday 15 September 2006 to raise funds earmarked for the Lebanese Red Cross.  With the onslaught of hostilities in June 2006 many innocent Lebanese were caught up in the crossfire and a large number of innocent men, women, children and the elderly were killed.

Many people in Australia were touched by the work the Red Cross was doing throughout Lebanon to save lives and property of many people.  We were deeply touched by the brave Red Cross workers who lost their lives while on duty doing their job.

Diana Abdul-Rahman and Mary Abdel-Massih both of Lebanese background jointly organised this worthwhile event.  Diana was born and raised in Australia of Lebanese parents and she works full time in the Federal Government.  Mary and her husband migrated to Australia from Lebanon 30 years ago.

These two ladies came together in the spirit of unity to help Lebanon and the Lebanese regain their independence and freedom from this unwonted war.   They spent all their spare time towards organising the fundraising dinner, which included preparing the venue, negotiating with many local Lebanese businesses in Canberra for all food items to be donated and was able to obtain items for the auction and raffle tickets.
