Women Mental Health Carer Survey 2010

Are you a woman supporting someone with a mental illness?

Tell us your story, we’re listening.

www.surveymonkey.com/womenmentalhealthcarersurvey2010

18,300 women in the ACT are carers – many of them are caring for friends or relatives living with mental illness.

As a consequence of their caring role, women mental health carers often experience poorer
health and wellbeing, social isolation and reduced income and employment compared to their non-carer counterparts.
Despite this disadvantage, there is limited ACT-specific and women-specific information relating to the
unique needs and life experiences of women mental health carers in the ACT.

Consequently the Women’s Centre for Health Matters and the ACT Women and Mental Health Working Group
has developed this Women Mental Health Carer Survey 2010.

By completing this survey you’ll be helping ACT services better meet the needs of ALL women.

For more information regarding this research project,
please contact Kate Judd at the Women’s Centre for Health Matters.

Nominations :  2010 Ethnic Business Awards

Dear Friends,

Over the past 22 years, the Ethnic Business Awards (the Awards) have stood as a triumph for diversity and a celebration of success. As one of the nation's longest running business awards, the awards champion the cultural diversity, ingenuity and success within Australia's national business community. They also symbolise the contribution of migrants to the social and economic evolution of Australia.

The success of the Awards is exemplified by the fact that they are currently the longest televised business awards. Indeed, they are also the second longest running business awards venture in Australia.

The legitimacy and significance of the Awards is highlighted by the ongoing support of Australia’s political leaders. Since their inception, the awards have been presented by Prime Ministers, Governor’s General and other key leaders.

The Awards are also supported by leaders in business including Don Argus, Eve Crestani, Dr Ziggy Switkowski, Carla Zampatti and Allan Gyngall. They all give generously of their time to judge the entries every year.

The Awards have an enduring relationship with NAB who has been proud principle sponsors for the past 21 years. Companies including Telstra, MBF and Woodside Energy have also been key sponsors.

The Awards are unique in that they are only open to people born overseas. This includes English and non-English speaking countries such as USA, UK, China, Japan, etc. Last year the Awards received nominations from people born in a 102 countries.

SBS has been a sponsor of the Awards since inception. For the first ten years, they televised the awards live nationally for one hour. Last year they broadcast the entirety of the Gala Presentation Dinner 3 times for two hours per session.

The Awards are also broadcast internationally over the Australian Network into 44 countries. Also last year, Aurora community channels broadcast a minimum of 10 hours on the Foxtel, Optus and Austar Networks: We also have TVB, Jadeworld who sponsor the Awards and broadcast the event into 33 countries including Australia.

Invitation:

THE FRIENDS OF THE ANU Classics MUSEUM
invite you to an illustrated lecture by
Dr Monica Jackson

The Antikythera Shipwreck:
Dating an Ancient Computer Using Jewellery Evidence

THURSDAY 22 JULY AT 8.00 pm

in the HAYDON-ALLEN TANK at the Australian National University

Two Mediterranean storms two centuries apart have provided the setting for an extraordinary shipwreck story that continues to unfold today. The first storm, in the middle of the 1st century BC drove a heavily laden Roman merchant vessel on to the coastal cliffs off the tiny island of Antikythera, north of Crete. The second storm 2,000 years later was the catalyst for the discovery of the wreck and its rich cargo.

The ship's hoard of ancient Greek artifacts varied from original bronze life-size statues and bronze figurines, to marble reproductions of older works, jewellery, wine containers, and one immensely complicated scientific instrument referred to as the Antikythera Mechanism, a device of such sophistication and astonishing accuracy of  construction that its structure, function and purpose have eluded scholars for more than a century. Only recently, applying high-resolution imaging systems and three-dimensional X-ray tomography, have experts been able to decipher inscriptions and reconstruct certain functions of the bronze gears. What we know is that the Antikythera Mechanism is the result of the application of science in action: Mathematics, Geometry, Astronomy and Mechanics.
This paper will consider a selection of the recovered treasures and present a summary of the history of scientific research. The most challenging area is the chronology of the mechanism itself, which will be discussed in conjunction with the most recent epigraphic evidence. For the first time the jewellery evidence will be used to determine and confirm its date of manufacture.

Dr Monica Jackson FSA
is a classical archaeologist, author and lecturer on ancient jewellery and the luxury arts.  She has lectured extensively on the luxury arts both in Australia and overseas.  Monica specialises in the archaeology of the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea areas, her particular area of interest being the study of Hellenistic gold jewellery as chronological evidence.  She has been involved in The University of Sydney excavations in Greece, Cyprus and further east.

THE LECTURE WILL BE FOLLOWED BY SUPPER IN THE MUSEUM

It’s a chance to get connected with community media outlets, find out about training and internship opportunities and learn from people in the media industry.

Radioactive is a space for young people to take part in workshops, information sessions and presentations. You don’t need any experience in the media, just come and see how you can get involved.

Radioactive will get you connected and get your voice heard!

In addition to media presentations, the themes of language, intercultural dialogue, heritage and identity will be explored in presentations and workshops. We will look at the importance of youth participation and representation in the media as a way to build community strength, encourage dialogue and work towards understanding each other.

Grab the chance and fill out the attached registration form to confirm your place at the conference. Places are limited so get in quick!

Disability e-news

Welcome

Welcome to another edition of the disability e-news.

We've had some great progress since the last edition of the e-news. I'm particularly pleased with today's launch of the Liveable Housing Design standards - a leap forward for the rights ot people with disabilities in the place it matters most: their own homes. The aim is eventually for adaptable design to be incorporated into every new house - so that people with disabilities don't have to spend a fortune adapting houses to suit their needs. A little bit of extra expense at the design stage saves a lot of money down the track.

You will find more information about Liveable Housing Design below, not to mention some other good news and achievements from the last month.

I hope you enjoy this edition of the e-news!

Regards,

Bill.

Liveable Housing Design standards

This morning we launched the first ever Liveable Housing Design standards in Australia, a voluntary standard that will encourage people to build homes that can be adapted to meet their needs throughout their lifetime.

And the Gillard Labor Government putting $1 million forward to promote Liveable Housing with the property and construction sectors.

This is a great leap forward and a fantastic example of what can be achieved when government, industry and people with disabilities all work together.

The launch also received some good media coverage, including reports in the Sydney Morning Herald and the Daily Telegraph.

National Disability Awards - we need your help!

We need your help to get as many nominations for the National Disability Awards as possible before the 23 July deadline!

Nominations are open to people with disability who have contributed to their community, those who have helped improve the lives of people with disability, and people with disability or their carers who have overcome adversity to achieve personal goals.

Last year's awards recognised the commitment of some great advocates and fighters for people with disability. It'd be great to see all disability organisations make at least one nomination for someone they believe has made a real difference.

The fight for equal rights and fair treatment for people with disability is carried out every day by thousands of Australians who deserve recognition through these Awards.

Award recipients will be announced at a gala dinner held at the Great Hall in Parliament House, Canberra on 23 November 2010.

All Australians can nominate someone they know in one of the six Award categories.

bulletYoung Disability Challenge Award

bulletSocial Inclusion Award

National Consultation Process on UN Convention on Disability Rights

In 2008 the Australian Government signed up to the UN Convention on the rights of people with disability. As part of this we are required to report every four years on the progress we're making in promoting those rights.

A draft report has been released and is open for comment from the community.

ADE Funding

Australian Disability Enterprises have expressed concern since the Federal Budget was handed down in May about the lack of a funding increase for them in 2010/2011. I have held several meetings with ADE representatives and I have some great news to announce. ADEs will get an extra $4.5 million in 2010/2011, bringing their total Government funding to more than $204 million. We have also introduce a red-tape reduction trial, which means that ADEs will need to spend less time undertaking assessments of workers.
