2. International Mother Language Day event: Raising Children in More than One
Language
This event on Sunday 21 February went very well; barely a seat to spare in the
150 seat lecture theatre! The ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Joy
Burch, spoke at the opening and the Shadow Minister, Steve Doszpot, joined us
for a while and shared his own multilingual experiences as a migrant to
Australia.
Most attendees were parents of young children – over 20 of whom, several babes
in arms, were also present - and extremely well behaved!! Constable Kenny Koala
dropped in with the AFP Multicultural Liaison Team and was a great hit.
The panel discussion led by two parents and three teenage bilingual (in one case
trilingual) young people was extremely informative and generated a lot of
questions and comments from participants. During subsequent discussions and over
afternoon tea, a great deal of valuable information was exchanged and great
links were made.
The multiple benefits for children of being raised in more than one language
were emphasised again and again, and the great turnout of busy people on a
Sunday afternoon shows the depth of interest in this area. CMCF hopes that the
energy and connections generated through this seminar will lead to future events
and activities to support bilingualism in the ACT

Invitation : an interfaith conference “NATURE OF INTERFAITH DIALOGUE IN THE
MODERN WORLD on the 27th of February at the ANU
Bluestar Intercultural Centre was established by a group of young Australian
Muslims in 2009 as a platform for bringing together people in the Australian
Capital Territory. Founders of Bluestar Intercultural Centre see the need for
the Muslim community to interact with the greater society and meet the needs of
the general public to increase its awareness of the Muslim community, its
religion and culture.
Bluestar is the first intercultural organization established by the Muslims in
ACT specifically to focus on building relationships between people of a
diversity of cultures and faiths that make up the multicultural and multi-faith
social fabric of Australia.
Bluestar plans to energize the intercultural work that has already progressed in
ACT with innovative and pioneering initiatives in coming years. It aims to add
value to the already substantially developed intercultural movement in
Australia.
Founders of Bluestar have been involved in intercultural work since 2004,
assisting in intercultural projects undertaken in Canberra including university
panels and the first ever intercultural iftar dinner at the Federal Parliament
House.
Bluestar Intercultural Centre has positioned itself at an historic crossroads of
cultural encounters. Its will provide great impetus to the development of
positive dialogue initiatives in ACT.
Bluestar will work hard to make a valuable contribution towards removing bigotry
and misconceptions between Australians and towards establishing peace and
harmony in Australia together with its partner organisations.
Bluestar believes that positive human interactions make all the difference in
establishing harmony in our society. When people know each other and try to
understand each other’s frame of reference, a natural affinity emerges. It is
this awareness that shatters stereotypes, false assumptions and negative
perceptions.
We
at Bluestar will endeavour to build bridges through dialogue, social
interactions and education and to facilitate enduring relationships
between people belonging to different races, cultures and faiths through
intercultural dialogue and understanding.
The
circumstances of the global society we live in require sincere dialogue between
people of different faiths, cultures and races. Graphic mass media, the internet
and ease of travel have allowed us to become instantly aware of any event around
the globe. The actions of an individual in one part of the world can affect and
influence the reactions of others elsewhere. Consequences of such behaviour and
amplification of local events to a global scale mean that it is disadvantageous
to people of different faiths and cultures to withdraw to their respective
corners.
Bluestar Intercultural Centre believes that dialogue between people of diverse
cultures and religions is not only imperative but also should be taken to a
higher level. We call this level dialogue through action, which implies
that for lasting understanding to occur, we need to act now.
Bluestar Intercultural Centre also works to bridge the cultural polarisation
within the Australian Muslim community resulting from the differential migration
patterns and the diversity of countries from which Muslims originate. We believe
that dialogue and social interaction will result in Australian Muslims to
develop their own unique Australian culture. We also believe that Australian
Muslims have much to offer to the positive development of the intellectual,
cultural and religious landscape of Australia. Bluestar Intercultural Centre is
ready to facilitate this development with the energy of young Australian
Muslims.
We,
therefore, engage with people in dialogue and social interactions in order to:
1. Recognize shared universal and human values
2. Become recognised as helping to end bigotry and prejudice
3. Demonstrate the value we add to the world
Bluestar intercultural centre will organize an interfaith conference on the 27th
of February at the Australian National University.
We at
Bluestar would like to extend a cordial invitation to you to attend our
conference titled “Nature Of The Interfaith Dialogue In The Modern World” .
Kind Regards,
Abdul Celil Gelim

Autumn market to mark Harmony Day
February 9, 2010
The autumn market at the Italian Cultural Centre in Forrest is going
multicultural in celebration of Harmony Day, the Chair of the Canberra
Multicultural Community Forum, Sam Wong, said today.
“The market is held quarterly to correspond with the seasons and is a
long-standing fixture at the centre. In the past it has had a predominantly
Italian flavour,” Mr Wong said
“But when organisers saw that the autumn market on Sunday, March 21 was going to
coincide with Harmony Day they thought it would be an excellent opportunity to
open it up to other ethnic groups.
“CMCF fully supports this venture and encourages other communities to come
forward with food and information stalls, dance and musical performances as well
as art and cultural displays.”
Mr Wong said that if the venture is a success, it could become a regular event.
“The Forum has always been a major supporter of Harmony day and in the past has
run a number of events to support it,” he said. “It is a national festival which
celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation as well as promoting
the benefits of cultural diversity.”
Expressions of interest from interested groups should be submitted by close of
business on February 12. An application form can be downloaded from the website
at

Commonwealth Day Celebration Committee
COMMONWEALTH DAY MULTI-FAITH CELEBRATION
MONDAY 8 MARCH 2010
A Multi-faith Celebration of the Commonwealth will be held at the Australian
Centre for Christianity and Culture (corner King’s Avenue and Blackall Street,
Barton) commencing at 11am on Commonwealth Day Monday 8 March 2010.
The Celebration is modelled on the Commonwealth Observance which Her Majesty the
Queen attends in Westminster Abbey each Commonwealth Day. The theme for the
Celebration this year is: Science, Technology and Society – Strengthening the
Modern Commonwealth.
Local leaders of major world religions will participate in the reading of six
affirmations. As in past years, the Celebration will also feature a varied
program of cultural performances that express both the global scope of the
modern Commonwealth of Nations and the multicultural diversity of modern
Australia. The groups that will perform are part of our Canberra community,
helping to make the Celebration one that, in addition, captures the festive
spirit of the Canberra Day public holiday.
All are invited to come and participate. Parking is available in the grounds of
the Centre and in nearby public car parks. The celebration, which is expected
to last for 90 minutes, will be followed by lunch.
The Celebration has been assisted by the ACT Government’s Multicultural Grants
Program 2009-10.
